Price: $180.00
LIONEL HAMPTON. Pamphlet signed:
"Good/Luck./Lionel/Hampton" on front cover, 8p, 5½x8½. Titled:
"Lionel Hampton/Workshop in/Jazz History". Mailer for Hampton's workshop at
the Lionel Hampton School of Music at the University of Idaho, Moscow, Idaho, to
be held from June 8-12, 1987. The mailer, which is stapled together at the
mid-right edge, includes a registration form for the workshop. Lionel Leo
Hampton (1908-2002), the first jazz vibraphonist, began his career as a
drummer. Louis Armstrong encouraged him to try the vibraphone, used by
NBC radio to announce intermissions. Their 1930 recording of "Memories of
You" forever associated Hampton with the instrument, although he was also an
accomplished piano player. In 1940, Hampton formed his own band, which became
the first Black band to tour the racially segregated South with a white singer
(1950). Slightly creased. Fine condition.
