LIONEL HAMPTON - RECEIPT SIGNED 10/19/1950 - HFSID 265690
Price: $340.00
LIONEL HAMPTON. Receipt signed: "Lionel Hampton", 1p, 7¼x7.
Los Angeles, California, 1950 October 19. On letterhead of Tom Kelley,
Hollywood. Hampton acknowledges receipt of $500 from Schmidt Lithography Company
in payment of a testimonial for a beer display. Lionel Hampton (1908-2002)
began his career as a drummer. Louis Armstrong encouraged him to try the
vibraphone, used by NBC radio to announce intermissions. Their 1930
recording of "Memories of You" forever associated Hampton with the instrument,
although he was also an accomplished piano player. In 1940, Hampton formed his
own band, which became the first Black band to tour the racially segregated
South with a white singer (1950). Lightly shaded at right edge. Horizontal fold.
Lightly creased at corners. Overall, fine condition.
