Signed letter to columnist Louis Sobol, saying he turned down
publication through the Literary Guild Book Club, and going on to explain why.

Typed letter signed: "Lionel", in pencil, 8½x11. April 6,
1955. Montreal, Quebec, Canada. In part: "Dear Louie, I know you and
Peggy and Jerry Berns and others were eager to know what happened with the book
club business - so a quick note on of the subject. None of this is for
publication. It sounds crazy but we were selected for Literary Guild and
turned it down. I nearly died when my Doubleday editor informed me...".
Lionel Shapiro (1908-1958) was a Canadian journalist and novelist,
writing as a war correspondent for The Montreal Gazette during World War
II. Some of his experiences reporting for World War II influenced his romance
novel The Sixth of June, which was later turned into the film
D-Day the Sixth of June. Louis Sobol (1896-1986) was an
entertainment columnist ("New York Cavalcade") for the Hearst Newspapers. Right
margin heavily torn and chipped. Small chips to left edge. Corners worn. Heavily
toned. Tear to upper left margin. Ink notes (unknown hand) on upper right.
