LISTER HILL
With war already raging in Europe, the Senator promises to read "at once" the book America Next.
Typed Letter signed: "Lister Hill" as U.S. Senator, 1p, 8x10. Washington, D.C., 1940 November 18. On letterhead of the Senate Committee on Military Affairs to Alfred Bergman, New York, N.Y. In full: I am just in receipt of your letter of the 16th and also the copy of 'America Next' by Peter Markham. I deeply appreciate the kindness which prompted you to send me the book. I shall read it at once with greatest interest and I am sure with the greatest benefit. All my thanks. [Previous sentence underlined with pen.] With kindest regards and all good wishes I am, very sincerely". Joseph Lister Hill (1894-1984) was named for antiseptic pioneer Joseph Lister, a prophetic choice, since Hill became known for public health legislation: funding hospital construction and medical research. Hill, a Democrat, served in the US House of Representatives from 1923 and as a US Senator from Alabama (1938-1969). A moderate, Hill signed the Southern Manifesto opposing school desegregation but broke with his southern colleagues on some issues. In the House, he had chaired the Military Affairs Committee, and in the Senate he was a senior member of key committees, including Appropriations. He was Senate Majority Whip (1941-1947). Lightly creased. Fine condition.
