LIZBETH WEBB
"The Champagne Soprano" signs a pink album leaf
Signature: "Lizbeth Webb", 4¾x3¾. Lizbeth Webb (b. 1926)
gained fame as a band singer on the BBC during World War II, performing
as many as three shows a day during the London blitz. After the war, she
made a smooth transition to starring roles in West End musicals, earning the
sobriquet "The Champagne Soprano". Her "This Is My Lovely Day" from
Bless the Bride (1947) was the BBC's most requested song for several
years. She starred as Sarah Brown in a London production of Guys and
Dolls, giving a command performance to the newly crowned Queen Elizabeth
II. Webb retired for a time after marrying Col. Guy Campbell, heir to a
barony, in 1956, but would return to the West End in the title role of The
Merry Widow in 1969. Two CD compilations of Webb's songs were issued in 2004
and 2005. Lightly worn. Lightly soiled. Lightly toned at top edge. Newspaper
residue affixed at top left. Pencil note (unknown hand) at bottom right.
Otherwise, fine condition.
