Typed Letter signed: "Lloyd Bridges", 1p, 7½x10. On personal letterhead. No place, 1998 March 3. To "Dear Sarah". In full: "I was blacklisted in the 50's during the height of McCarthyism. It was a bad time. I was always against prejudice of any kind, and when I was a member of the Actors' Lab, there was an opportunity to do something as part of a group to stop prejudice and help people. I did clear my name with the FBI. As for Sea Hunt: The series certainly brought me more notice than anything I had ever done before as an actor. It also brought me more money than anything else up to that point. Artistic satisfaction was lacking but I was able to get that from other things. I was an athlete in college and my dad wanted me to be a lawyer. I majored in political science but all I wanted to do was act. I went to New York to do drama but nobody else was doing Shakespeare. I had to unlearn what I had been taught and muddy up my diction to get work. Remember how important your family is. Love them and be close. Life has been good to me and I am grateful for all I have. Have a great life! Thanks for writing. Warm Regards." After stage experience in stock, Bridges made his Broadway debut in the late 30s in a modern dress version of "Othello". In 1941, he was signed by Columbia and during the next four years appeared in some 25 low-budget films. Tall, blonde, and rugged, he was used frequently in westerns and action pictures, sometimes as a heavy. After he left Columbia and began free-lancing in 1945, his roles and films improved and included many lead parts in B pictures and important parts in A pictures. He starred in the TV series "Sea Hunt" (1958-1961). His films include: Here Comes Mr. Jordan, Talk of the Town, Sahara, A Walk in the Sun, Ending, The Rainmaker, Airplane and Airplane II.
