In 1942 and 1943, seven authors sign thank you notes to a fellow writer, the manager of the book department at Marshall Field department store.
Comprises seven ANsS: "Lloyd C. Douglas", "Emily Kimbrough", "Cornelia Otis Skinner", "Krishnalal Shridharani" [written in English and below that in Gujarati], "Bob Casey", "Ernest Poole" and "Irving Stone", 1p, 7½x11¼, front and verso. ROSE OLLER HARBAUGH, to whom these notes were written, was a longtime manager and buyer for the book department of the Marshall Field department store in Chicago and organized many successful book signing parties. She also wrote several books, including Eddie Elephant Has a Party (1947) and Favorite Torte and Cake Recipes (1951). Among the signers here are LLOYD CASSEL DOUGLAS (1877-1951), an American minister, wrote several novels, most inspired by religious themes, including Magnificent Obsession and The Robe. EMILY KIMBROUGH (1899-1998) was a fashion editor, scriptwriter and the author of several books. CORNELIA OTIS SKINNER (1901-1979), a stage and film actress who also wrote eight plays, satirical verses and essays. Her Our Hearts Were Young and Gay, co-authored with her friend Kimbrough, was a description of a European vacation, one of several of her works made into films. KRISHNALAL SHRIDHARANI, a protégé of Gandhi, wrote books introducing the Indian culture and especially the Gandhian approach to nonviolent political change to the West. Particularly influential was his War Without Violence (1939), which influenced the civil rights movement in the United States. ROBERT J. CASEY (1890-1962), a decorated combat veteran of World War I, covered international affairs and wrote a humor column for the Chicago Daily News from 1920-1947. In 1940, he covered the London Blitz for the paper, and he traveled to many theaters of World War II. Journalist and novelist ERNEST POOLE (1880-1950) wrote the first novel to be awarded a Pulitzer Prize: His Family (1918). Poole's most influential novel was The Harbor (1915), one of the first fictional works to present a strongly positive picture of labor unions. IRVING STONE (1903-1989) wrote fictionalized accounts of famous persons, including three Presidential couples. Some notes are dated 1942 and 1943 and some are not dated. 2 pinhead-size ink blots on verso show through to upper blank margin. Irregular left edge from removal from bound book.
