Typed Letter signed: "Lloyd C. Douglas", 1 page, 7¼x10½. Los Angeles, California, 1939 December 5. On personal letterhead to Prof. Wm. W. Seward, Jr., Richmond, Virginia. In full: "I greatly value your comradely note of October thirty-first which surely deserved a more prompt reply. I have just returned from many weeks lecturing, during which time it was quite impossible to deal with any but the most urgent business correspondence. Thank you for your cooperation in bringing my books to the attention of your students. I almost envy you your opportunity as a teacher of English literature. There are not many jobs in which work and play can be so neatly integrated. I am enclosing my autograph, as you request. With all good wishes I am, Sincerely yours". Lloyd Cassel Douglas (1877-1951), a minister, did not publish his first novel until he was past 50, but then authored several popular, religious-themed novels, including Magnificent Obsession (1929) and The Robe (1942). Four of his books were made into feature films. Normal mailing folds. Slightly creased. Lightly toned. Pencil note (unknown hand) on verso. Stained from envelope on verso (not visible on front). Otherwise, fine condition.
