LLOYD BENTSEN. Signature: "Lloyd Bentsen/Texas", 3½x2 card.
In 1970, attorney and WWII veteran Lloyd Millard Bentsen, Jr. (1921-2006), who
had been a U.S. Representative from Texas from 1948-1955, defeated George
H.W. Bush to become U.S. Senator from Texas, serving from 1971-1993. In
1988, he was Michael Dukakis' running mate for Vice President, becoming
noted for a remark to Republican vice presidential nominee Dan Quayle,
who compared his Congressional experience to that of John F. Kennedy. Bentsen's
retort: "Senator, I served with Jack Kennedy. I knew Jack Kennedy. Jack Kennedy
was a friend of mine. Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy." Although the
Dukakis/Bentsen team was soundly defeated by the Bush/Quayle ticket, Bentsen
would later serve as Clinton's Secretary of the Treasury from 1993-1994.
