S. Senator from Texas, serving from 1971 to 1993. In 1988, he was Michael Dukakis' running mate for Vice President, becoming noted for a remark to Republican vice presidential nominee Dan Quayle, who compared his Congressional experience to that of John F. Kennedy. Bentsen's retort: "Senator, I served with Jack Kennedy. I knew Jack Kennedy. Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy." Although the Dukakis/Bentsen team was soundly defeated by the Bush/Quayle ticket, Bentsen would later serve as Clinton's Secretary of the Treasury from 1993 to 1994.
