LOIS WHEELER SNOW
Signature from the actress and widow of Edgar Snow's, and important
China observer in her own right
Signature: "Lois Wheeler Snow", 5x3. Lois Wheeler Snow (b.
1920) was the second wife, and widow, of journalist Edgar Snow, the first
Western journalist to interview Mao Zedong, and the author of several books
sympathetic to Chinese communism, beginning with Red Star Over China
(1937). It was through Edgar Snow that Mao issued his famous 1970 invitation
for President Nixon to visit China. Lois married Edgar Snow in the 1950s,
shortly before the couple move to Switzerland, finding the climate of opinion in
the US too hostile during the McCarthy era. Lois Wheeler Snow wrote books of
her own on China, beginning with China on Stage (1973), and co-authored
of Edgar Snow's China. Her view of China changed dramatically
after the Tiananmen massacre of 1989. Accusing the Chinese government of
stealing papers of her late husband, she began to issue harsh criticisms of
human rights violations in the People's Republic, and has lobbied US
Presidents, including President Obama, to work for the release of political
prisoners there. Edges toned. Fine condition.
