LOLA FISHER
Actress Lola Fisher wrote this letter from Los Angeles in 1984, on
the back of a composite b/w publicity photo, about her various roles, including
performing as Eliza Doolittle in the original Broadway production of My Fair
Lady under Julie Andrews.
Autograph letter signed "Lola Fisher". 1 page, 8½x11, with
three binder holes at left edge. Los Angeles, California, Oct. 24, 1984.
Written on verso of a composite publicity photo of Fisher with four smaller
images. In full: "Dear Mr. Axelrod, My professional career began when,
after winning a local singing contest on Long Island, I went on tour with
Sammy Kaye's Band. Next, I sang in the chorus at Radio City Music Hall,
several Broadway musical and, my big break, as they say, came when I got into
the musical version of Pygmalion. Mine was the Cinderella story
personified. It was an August night, 1956, at the Mark Hellinger Theatre in New
York, Julie Andrews, the star of My Fair Lady was ill. I
had been in the chorus and was rushed into the star role. At the close of
the performance, the audience loved it all and Rex Harrison personally led an
on-stage ovation. My Broadway run lasted four years during which I played
Eliza about 150 times and later played the lead on a tour of Russia under the
auspices of the U.S.State [sic] Department. I negotiated the role
opposite Ray Milland and others in numerous theatres throughout the United
States. I played Sarah Brown in Guys and Dolls opposite Dan
Dailey and Betty Grable for 9 months at the Dunes Hotel in Las Vegas. My latest
tour was in Peter Pan with Rip Taylor and I keep my suitcase ready
for the next big break! Yours sincerely,". American actor Fisher is
probably best known for being an understudy to Julie Andrews in the original
Broadway production of My Fair Lady (1956-1962). Originally a part of
the show's singing ensemble, she performed in the role of Liza Doolittle
around 150 times. She also had acting credits in the original Broadway
productions of My Darlin' Aida (1952-1953) and By the Beautiful
Sea (1954) and numerous credits in local theatre companies. Lightly creased,
otherwise in fine condition.
