LOLA LANE
Signed autograph letter, describing how she spends her time since retiring from films
Autograph Letter signed: "Lola Lane", 2 pages, 6x8¾ ( front and verso). No place, 1970 December 7. To "Dear George", in full: "Thanks for your letter, and I want to explain to you that when people retire from the film industry usually you do not get mail or it gets lost some way. That's probably what happened to the still pictures you mentioned. Also we have other interests and paths to follow - and somehow get out of contact with almost everyone in the industry. It is indeed very gratifying that after all these years you remember me - and wanted a picture. I thank you so much. I am now pursuing many things I didn't have time for when in the films - I design and make all my clothes! I paint, do ceramics and all the crafts I can master and I am a student of Mexican art and culture. I intend to live part time in Mexico, as I find it a wonderful land with beautiful people & climate. Again thanks and a Merry Christmas and great New Year. Sincerely". One of the four musically talented Mullican sisters (renamed Lane soon after their arrival on Broadway), Lola Lane (1906-1981) appeared in Broadway musicals of the late 1920s and then moved to Hollywood. She starred in dozens of films from 1929 to 1946. Among her best known performances were The Girl from Havana (1929) and Zanzibar (1940). She appeared in some films with her sisters, notably Four Daughters (1938). Her second of five husbands was actor Lew Ayres. Lightly creased. Fine condition.
