LORD ERNEST HAMILTON
The British soldier and fascist politician is delighted to subscribe to the publication of a
regimental history.
Autograph Letter signed: "Ernest Hamilton", 2 pages (front and verso), 4½x7. Semley
[England] 1910 , August 4, n. y. On personal letterhead to "Dear P. Martin", in full: "I am of
course only too delighted to subscribe towards the publication of Dunlop's History of the Regiment
and I enclose checque for 2P towards the expenses. It should prove a most interesting publication.
Yours sincerely". Lord Ernest Hamilton (1858-1939), a captain in the 11th Hussars (no
doubt the regiment referenced in the letter), was a Conservative Member of the House of
Commons (1885-1892). The "Lord" was purely honorific. As the seventh son of James
Hamilton, 1st Duke of Abercorn, he held no noble title, nor was he honored with a peerage in
his later years. Hamilton wrote several novels which today would be called "thrillers",
many set on the Scottish border of the 16th and 17th century. These included Outlaws of
the March, Mawkin of the Flow, and Mary Hamilton. He also published historical works,
notably The Soul of Ulster, an anti-Catholic polemic. He became an outspoken fascist in
the 1920s. An anti-Semite, Hamilton also wrote on theology, denouncing the God of
Hebrew scripture as an evil God, inferior to the God of the New Testament. Multiple folds.
Toned. Light surface creases. Adhesive residue on corners. Staple holes in top left corner. Ink
notes (unknown hand). Otherwise, fine condition.
