LORD FREDERICK CAVENDISH
The English politician whose life was cut short by Irish nationalists signed this handwritten letter in 1871. Extremely Rare!
Autograph Letter Signed: "F. Cavendish". 4½x7 (folded). Dated March 12, 1871. Three pages of text. Features typed letterhead. In Part: "I beg to acknowledge the receipt of your note of the 9th critant, and to inform you that I have had much pleasure in presenting to the House of Commons the petition you forwarded".Lord Frederick Cavendish (1836-1882) was born in Sussex, England. Cavendish was a Liberal Party politician who worked under the guidance of prominent Prime Minister William Gladstone. He gained experience in the English government as private secretary to Lord Granville and private secretary to Gladstone. From 1880 to 1882, he was Financial Secretary to the Treasury. Mere hours after Cavendish was appointed Chief Secretary for Ireland, he was murdered in Phoenix Park by members of the Irish National Invincibles, an organization that sought Ireland's independence from the United Kingdom through radical means. The position of Chief Secretary made Cavendish responsible for the governance of Ireland, a previously independent state until the beginning of the 19th Century. Cavendish and the man he accompanied in Phoenix Park that day, Thomas Henry Burke, were the two key government officials who would oversee the governance of Ireland. Although Burke was the main target of the attack, both men died that day.Lightly toned. Light smudging throughout does not impact legibility. Mailing crease. Otherwise, fine condition.
