The equerry and racing manager for King Edward VII and King George V pens this letter
Autograph Letter signed: “Marcus Beresford” 2p (front and verso of a single sheet), 5x8, affixed
to a 6½x9½ sheet of paper. Written on stationery of the Marlborough Club, Pall Mall S.W.
Dated Friday, no year. To “My dear Sandhurst” In full: “to make use of your grand position to
help a poor chap -for me./ Rule 5 states that persons not actually from England will only be
allowed to compete by special permission of The Secretary of State./ I wish you would get that
permission from Campbell Bannerman./ I have known this boy for years -and take a great interest
in him - and he will do well - if he gets this chance./ I know you will do what you can for me./ Yrs
sincerely”. Lord Marcus Beresford (1848-1922), full name Marcus Talbot de la Poer
Beresford, was the 4th son of the 4th Marquis of Waterford. From 1890 onward, he was the
manager of the thoroughbred horses of King Edward VII and King George V. When
Prince Edward inherited the throne, Beresford was given the title of Extra Equerry and
Manager of His Majesty's Thoroughbred Stud. Similarly, King George kept Beresford on in
his post as royal equerry until Beresford's passing in 1922. Pen note in an unknown hand in
the upper margin of the letter. Letter has been affixed to paper containing biographical
information on various member of the British peerage. Otherwise, fine condition.
