LORNE GREENE
Lorne Greene sends an autograph letter a month before his final public appearance of thanks for the mementos.
Autograph Letter Signed: "Lorne Greene", 1p, 7¼x10½. No place, 1972 October 29. On sheet imprinted with his name to "Dear Mr & Mrs Hilbom". In full: "My thanks. And the thanks of my 'better half' Nancy - since Women's Lib she is now my Equal Half - We are grateful for the trouble you took in preparing the lovely mementos of an exciting evening for me - with best wishes, Cordially". Nancy was Greene's second wife, NANCY DEALE (1933-2004), to whom he was married from 1961 until his death on September 11, 1987. The couple, who sometimes appeared together in plays (and Deale was also on a 1960 episode of Bonanza), had one child, actress Gillian Greene. The month after writing this letter, Greene would make his last appearance (1963-1972) as the NBC co-host (with Betty White) of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. In 1972, he began hosting the TV series, To The Wild Country (1972-1975), and he made guest appearances on The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour and The Special London Bridge Special. Canadian Lorne Greene (1915-1987) got his big break in 1959, after his performance in an episode of the western series, Wagon Train. The producer and creator of Bonanza immediately recognized Greene as the perfect Ben Cartwright, and he starred in the immensely popular series from 1959-1972. Greene's other TV roles included Battlestar Galactica, the miniseries, Roots, and several documentaries. He had a No. 1 hit record, "Ringo", in 1964, and released five albums of music. Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. Fine condition.
