As Secretary of the Treasury, he transmits documents to Attorney General Alfonso Taft.
Manuscript Letter signed: "L. Morrill" as Secretary of the Treasury, 1 page, 8x10. Docketed on blank integral leaf. Treasury Department (Washington, D.C.), 1876 October 27. To Alfonso Taft, Attorney General. In full: "In compliance with the request contained in your letter of the 11th ultimo, to be furnished certain information under seal of this Department, I have the honor to transmit herewith copy of a letter from Fourth Auditor of Treasury, dated the 24th instant, duly authenticated. With great respect your obedient servant". Lot Morrill (1813-1883) was Governor of Maine (1858-1861), U.S. Senator (1861-1869, 1869-1876) and Secretary of the Treasury (1876-1877). He was twice appointed to the Senate, first to replace Vice-President-elect Hannibal Hamlin, the second time to fill the seat of the recently deceased William Fessenden. Lot Morrill was not the author of the Morrill Act (1862) establishing land grant colleges. That honor fell to another New Englander, Representative Justin Morrill of Vermont. Multiple mailing folds. Toned at edges. Corners lightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
