LOTTE LEHMANN
Lotte Lehmann sends an autograph letter on a dog note card of thanks for telling her about a review that she had overlooked.
Autograph Letter Signed: "Lotte", 1½p front and verso, 7¾x9¾ when open on a dog note card. No place, 1963 February 7. To: "Dearest Ernô-" In full: "Thank you again! I get Musical America, and had overlooked the fine review. Isn't it wonderful that this film is such a big success? I have an idea: they should do one [illegible] on 'slow' with me: an interview which would be really a kind of Lecture on the [illegible] Lied. (Perhaps with one singer, illusionary?) It could be confirmed with reminiscences. Since the series is such a success. I think they are silly not to do something with me... Or am I conceited? Much love! Yours," Fold crease not near signature. Fine condition. Included hand addressed mailing envelope 5x4: "Mr. Ernô Balogh/3040 Idaho Avenue/N/ W./Washington 16/D. C." and on verso "Lotte Lehmann. 4565 Via Huerto/Hope Ranch./Santa Barbara/Cal." Postmarked Santa Barbara, California, 1963 February. Lightly worn at edges. Stamp missing. Otherwise, fine condition. German soprano Lotte Lehmann (1888-1976) one of the most eminent lyric dramatic sopranos of her day made her Metropolitan Opera debut on January 11, 1934 as Sieglinde in Die Walküre. A month later, Lehmann performed on Arturo Toscanini's first radio broadcast (The Cadillac Hour, February 11, 1934). She was renowned for her interpretations of Mozart, Wagner and the songs of Schumann. Lotte Lehmann would retire from the recital stage in 1951. She would then teach master classes at the Music Academy of the West (which she helped found) in Santa Barbara, California, and Lehmann would also give master classes in a number of other cities in the U.S. and abroad.
