Autograph Note Signed: "Lotte", 1p, 8½x11 personal imprinted letterhead. Santa Barbara, California, no date. In full: "Forgive this short note - it is impossible at the moment to write a letter... Much love - yours" Preprinted above autograph message: "Dear Friends,/Thank you for your kind thoughts!/I am sorry to be unable to write you a letter,/as I should like to do, but I am overwhelmed/by an avalanche of gracious wishes, which makes/me very happy." Fold creases not near signature. Fine condition. Includes hand addressed mailing envelope, 9½x4: "Mr. and Mrs. Ernô Balogh/3040 Idaho Avenue/N. W./Washington 16, D. C." Postmarked Santa Barbara, California, 1963 March 2. Lightly jagged at upper margin from being opened. Lightly toned at edges. Otherwise, fine condition. German soprano Lotte Lehmann (1888-1976) one of the most eminent lyric dramatic sopranos of her day made her Metropolitan Opera debut on January 11, 1934 as Sieglinde in Die Walküre. A month later, Lehmann performed on Arturo Toscanini's first radio broadcast (The Cadillac Hour, February 11, 1934). She was renowned for her interpretations of Mozart, Wagner and the songs of Schumann. Lotte Lehmann would retire from the recital stage in 1951. She would then teach master classes at the Music Academy of the West (which she helped found) in Santa Barbara, California, and Lehmann would also give master classes in a number of other cities in the U.S. and abroad.
