LOTTE LEHMANN
Lotte Lehmann sends an autograph note on a picture postcard of thanks for the book.
Autograph Note Signed: "Lotte", 3½x5½ picture postcard of Channel Drive in Santa Barbara, California. In full: "Dear Ernô- forgive me for this short note, but I am 'snowed under' letters, cards, wires... Thank you - and much love for your book. Yours" Hand addressed: "Mr. Ernô Balogh/3040 Idaho Av./N. W./Washington/D. C./20016" Postmarked Santa Barbara, California, 1967 March 17. German soprano Lotte Lehmann (1888-1976) one of the most eminent lyric dramatic sopranos of her day made her Metropolitan Opera debut on January 11, 1934 as Sieglinde in Die Walküre. A month later, Lehmann performed on Arturo Toscanini's first radio broadcast (The Cadillac Hour, February 11, 1934). She was renowned for her interpretations of Mozart, Wagner and the songs of Schumann. Lotte Lehmann would retire from the recital stage in 1951. She would then teach master classes at the Music Academy of the West (which she helped found) in Santa Barbara, California, and Lehmann would also give master classes in a number of other cities in the U.S. and abroad. Cancellation stamp touches two words still legible. Lightly worn and creased at corners. Stamp missing. Otherwise, fine condition.
