LOU AMBERS
Lou Ambers inscribes a black and white photograph of him winning a fight
possibly from his September 3, 1936 World Lightweight Championship.
Photograph inscribed and signed: "Frank Hingston/Best Wishes/Lou
Ambers". B/w, 8x10 overall, image 7¼x9 (one surface). Captioned:
"Winner and New Champion Lou Ambers". Likely taken after Ambers defeated Tony
Canzonari on September 3, 1936 to win the World Lightweight Championship in 15
rounds. Ambers was a tough fighter who made up for lack of boxing skill with
gutsiness. The "Herkimer Hurricane" had lost only once in more than three years
as a professional when he met lightweight champion Tony Canzoneri on May 10,
1935. He lost a 15-round decision, then won his next 15 fights and took the
lightweight championship by decision against Canzoneri in 15 rounds on September
3, 1936. He lost the title in what might have been his greatest fight
against Henry Armstrong on August 17, 1938. He regained the title with a
15-round decision over Armstrong on August 22, 1939. In 102 fights, Ambers
won 88, 29 on knockouts; lost 8, 2 by knockouts; and had 6 draws. Lightly
creased, noticeably at right just above writing. Lightly worn. Most defects not
evident head on. Overall, fine condition.
