LOU AMBERS. Photograph inscribed and signed: "Best Wishes to/My good friend/Danny/Franklin/from/Lou/Ambers". B/w, 5x7. Name imprinted at lower background. One of the top lightweights of the 1930s, Lou Ambers (1913-1995) was a tough fighter who made up for lack of boxing skill with gutsiness. The "Herkimer Hurricane" had lost only once in more than three years as a professional when he met lightweight champion Tony Canzoneri on May 10, 1935. He lost a 15-round decision, then won his next 15 fights and took the lightweight championship by decisioning Canzoneri in 15 rounds on September 3, 1936. Ambers lost the title in what might have been his greatest fight against Henry Armstrong on August 17, 1938. He regained the title with a 15-round decision over Armstrong on August 22, 1939. In 102 fights, Ambers had a record of 88 wins (29 by KOs), eight losses (2 by KOs) and six draws. Lightly creased at blank margins and corners. Minor surface creases and scratches (most not evident head on). Overall, fine condition.
