Typed Letter signed: "Louis Johnson" as The Secretary of Defense, 1 page, 7x9¼. Washington, D.C., 1949 April 20. Typed on The Secretary of Defense letterhead to the Honorable H. S. J. Sickel, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In full: "My friends were most devoted at the time of the President's announcement, and later after the "swearing in" ceremonies, in sending me their good wishes and cong-ratulations. It helped a lot! I appreciate very much the good wishes you express in your own letter, and I shall be glad to pass your letter on for Mrs. Johnson to read. Mrs. Maxwell is living well indeed for a woman of her years. With appreciation, I am, Sincerely yours," Louis A. Johnson (1891-1966), the second U.S. Secretary of Defense (under Harry S Truman, March 28, 1949-September 19, 1950) was Assistant Secretary of War from 1937-1940. Johnson, a WWI veteran, helped found the American Legion, serving as its National Commander from 1932-1933. Paperclip indentation at top left. Horizontal Mailing fold. Corners lightly toned and creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
