LOUIS AGASSIZ
Small piece of paper signed by scientist Louis Agassiz in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1851
Autograph sentiment signed "Yours truly/L Agassiz/Cambridge, Febr 20h, 1851". Pencil marks at right and bottom edge and pencil notations on verso, all in unknown hand. 4x3. Born in French-speaking Switzerland and educated at European universities, Agassiz (1807-1873) accepted a Professorship at Harvard (1848) and spent the rest of his life promoting American science. He made highly influential studies of fossil fish and glaciers, coining the term "Ice Age" to describe an ancient era of extensive glaciation. Although his fossil studies were used by others to support Darwin's Theory of Evolution, Agassiz never accepted that doctrine. He espoused catastrophism, believing that new species emerged after such upheavals, and defined a species as "a thought of God". Although most modern scientists accept the basic soundness of Darwin's theory, recent research vindicates Aggasiz' belief that species emergence and extinction is closely associated with global catastrophes. Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Signature is lightly smeared in places but is legible. Show-through from paper loss and adhesive residue on verso (does not touch signature). Light tear in bottom right corner. Folded once and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
