LOUIS BLANC
Nineteenth-century French politician writes note confirming a meeting for the following weekend
Autograph Letter signed: "Louis Blanc", 1p, 5¼x5¼. No place, 1863 June 4. To "My Dear Mr. Lewis", in full: "I shall be very glad, indeed, to spend the evening with you and Mrs. Lewis on Saturday next. Truly yours". Jean Joseph Louis Blanc (1811-1882) was a French journalist, historian and political activist. His book, The Organization of Work (1840), advocated a system of national workshops leading to socialism. He coined the phrase, "From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs," later borrowed by - and often attributed to - Karl Marx. Blanc was part of France's provisional government after the overthrow of the Orleanist monarchy in 1848, but after Napoleon III seized power, Blanc spent more than two decades in exile. Returning to France, he was elected to the National Assembly in 1871. An opponent of the revolutionary Paris Commune, he nevertheless introduced a successful motion of amnesty for the Communards in 1879. A Paris metro station is named after Blanc. Ink note (unknown hand) in upper right corner. Slightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
