LOUIS FISCHER
The international journalist and author who wrote several characterizations of famous
people signed this slip of paper and inscribed it to George Sanders
Autograph Note Signed: "To George Sanders/ from/ Louis Fischer/ Feb. 14, 1949", 7¾x4¾. (4
surfaces), B/w newspaper photo affixed at left edge, along with scissored printed caption: "Louis
Fischer - author of Men and Politics, the Great Challenge". Louis Fischer (1896-1970) began
his literary career as an ardent admirer of Soviet communism, and spent several years writing
from Moscow for The Nation. His disillusionment with the Soviet system was gradual; he
fought in the International Brigade in the Spanish Civil War. But by 1945 he had become
a staunchly anti-communist liberal, writing for The Progressive and similar publications. A
prolific author, he wrote biographies of Gandhi, Lenin and Stalin. George R. Sanders,
originally a disc jockey, became a prominent radio/TV interview host, first in
Los Angeles and later in Portland. Toned and creased. Right edge frayed from binding.
Stain at "F" in Fischer. Ink notes (unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
