LOUIS K. ANSPACHER
The playwright who favored the subject of the supernatural later in life signed this handwritten letter discussing ghosts
Autograph Letter Signed: “Louis K. Anspacher” in blue ink. 7¼x10½. Two pages. Printed letterhead indicates that it is sent from Ossining, New York. Postmarked October 11, 1933. Sent to Walter F. Ellis. Includes mailing envelope. In Full: Dear friend Ellis: I am sending you under another cover a photograph signed + inscribed to you. I also enclose the new announcement of the course in Psychics, which I am doing for the third time here in N.Y. So there is apparently much interest in the surreal. I have been thinking over the question of all evening of true ghost stories + I talked the possibility over with Kathyrn. She thinks it might be a sensation as she knows how they go with audiences for whom I have dramatized them. If you are considering a Ladies Night, it ought to be a fascinating subject matter, particularly if you introduced me + told them that you have finally discovered any secret “wild oat”. Let me know what you think. I would do fine ghost stories in which no medium was involved + I would select carefully a series of them that would cover everything in psychics from double personality; telepathy, premonitory ghosts, phantasms of the Living + the dead, telekinesis, up to out + out materializations”. He mentions his wife actress Kathryn Kidder in this letter; they were married in 1905 despite opposition from Anspacher's family. They were married until her death in 1939.  Louis K. Anspacher (1878-1947) was an American author who wrote plays for Broadway and television. His productions on the stage could be seen on Broadway until 1930, when The Rhapsody ended its run. Later in his career, he published Challenge of the Unknown: Exploring the Psychic World (1947). Ink smudges (entire letter legible). Mailing creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
