GEORGE J. WOOD, LOUIS L. JAMES and FRANK J. EVANS
All three 19th century thespians sign an album leaf, with James adding a sentiment.
Autograph Quotation signed: "When this you see, Remember me -/Louis Leavitt James/Dec. 31st, 1865", "F. J. Evans", and on verso "Geo. John Wood", 5¼x7¾. LOUIS L. JAMES (1842-1916) began his professional stage career with a Louisville stock company in 1863, moving to Philadelphia in 1872. In 1886 he formed his own company, specializing in road tours of Shakespeare's plays. He appeared in five Broadway revivals between 1899 and 1905: two each by Shakespeare (Macbeth, A Winter's Tale) and Sheridan (The Rivals, School for Scandal), and Oliver Goldsmith's She Stoops to Conquer. Producer and theatre manager GEORGE JOHN WOOD had his own New York theatre, Wood's Museum and Metropolitan, which ran 30 burlesque productions between 1868 and 1872. Wood ran into trouble when his sister and law and former employee Olivia Logan launched a "morals" campaign against burlesque in general and Wood in particular, resulting eventually in the closing of Wood's theatre. FRANK J. EVANS appeared in one of Wood's productions, Flock Flock (1869), a burlesque extravaganza with a book by Rita Sangalli. Lightly frayed at left edge. Lightly toned. Lightly creased. Light foxing. Lightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
