PHILIPPE, DUKE OF ORLEANS. Manuscript DS: "L P J d'Orleans", 1p, 8x9. No place, 1789 August 24.Military document dated a month after the storming of the Bastille, relating to second Captain Oberilot who began his service in 1758 and has been Captain since 1762. Louis Philippe Joseph (1743-1793) became Duke of Orleans in 1785 when his father died. He aided the French Revolutionists in 1789. Sent abroad by King Louis XVI in 1790, he returned to work against him (1791-1793). The Duke of Orleans renounced his title and assumed the name of Philippe-Égalité. Imprisoned, he was sentenced to death by the Revolutionary Tribunal at Paris and guillotined (1793). His son later reigned as King Louis Philippe (1830-1848). Fragile. Creased, soiled. Staple holes at upper margin. Lower left corner and edge missing. Folds, lightly stained.
