LOUIS ARMSTRONG
Black and white publicity photograph from Swingin' the Dream (1939) staring Louis
ArmstrongPhotograph inscribed and signed: "Best wishes/to Chas Silvia/from/Louis
Armstrong". B/w, 8x10. Captioned at lower margin: "Louis Armstrong/as 'Bottom' in the
Musical Production/Swing'n the Dream". Swingin' The Dream ran at the Center Theatre
on Broadway from November 29, 1939-December 9, 1939, a total of 13 performances.
The original musical comedy in two acts was set in 1890 New Orleans and starred
Armstrong as Bottom/Pyramus. This was Armstrong's second appearance on
Broadway (the first had been in 1929); he would not return to the Great White Way until 1984.
The previous year, Armstrong had appeared in two feature films, Dr. Rhythm and
Going Places. Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong, the virtuoso trumpeter and singer, was a
master of improvisation, and many consider him the most influential figure in early
history of jazz.On July 4, 2000, America marked the centennial of the birth of LOUIS
ARMSTRONG (1901-1971), her most celebrated jazz musician. "Satchmo", short for
"satchel mouth", popularized jazz singing, scat singing and improvised instrumental
solos to the mainstream public. He was America's musical ambassador to the world, a
multi-talented vocalist, trumpet player and entertainer who influenced scores of vocalists and
musicians. In 1967, Satchmo recorded "It's A Wonderful World", which did not become a hit
until 1987 (16 years after his death), when it was featured in the film Good Morning, Vietnam.
"Hello, Dolly!", a tune that he hated the first time he heard it, became another signature song
after his show-stopping rendition in the 1969 film starring Barbra Streisand. Lightly creased at
blank margins and corners. Surface creased, vertical creases at two words of writing (not at
signature). Pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso. Overall, fine condition.
