The Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer of Eugene O'Neill illustrates a note
regarding how long it took him to finish the two-volume work.
Self-Caricature signed: "Louis Sheaffer" in ANS, 1p, 5¾x9. No place,
no date. To unknown recipient. In full: "When I started working on a
biography of Eugene O'Neill and figured it would take four to five years,
I felt like: [Sheaffer has drawn a smiling face] But it took nearly sixteen
years, at which point I felt like: [Sheaffer has drawn a face with a
frown]". Louis Sheaffer (1913-1993), born Louis Slung, won the 1974
Pulitzer Prize in Biography for O'Neill, Son and Artist (1973). the
second volume in his two-volume biography of playwright Eugene O'Neill. The
first volume, O'Neill, Son and Playwright, had been published in 1968.
The sixteen years referred to in this note was the length of time it took him
to finish both books. Slightly creased with folds, horizontal folds touch
drawn images. Fine condition.
