LOUIS UNTERMEYER
Louis Untermeyer signs his poem The Garland for Debs.
Printed Poem signed: "Louis Untermeyer", 1p 8½x11. The Garland for Debs. In full: "Here, in our easy chairs, we sit and choose/Words for a garland woven of our praise;/The fluent metaphor, the striking phrase,/Inserted gracefully, are what we use ..../And there he stands, and silently reviews/The bitter-scented nights and flowerless days,/Thinking of all the many little ways/A man may win all that he seems to lose./And then-this verbal wreath, perfumed, precise./Pathetic incongruity .... It adorns/A head too scarred and knotted to be nice./This floral tribute prettifies the scorns/And outrage. Something plainer should suffice:/Some simple, patriotic crown of thorns./from DEBS ANS THE POETS" Louis Untermeyer (1885-1977, born in New York City) was an American author, poet and editor. He was the author or editor of over 100 books, co-founded the poetry magazine The Seven Arts and helped to establish the reputations of poets like Amy Lowell and Robert Frost; many of the anthologies and poetry collections that he edited wound up in American schools as textbooks. Untermeyer also wrote over a thousand poems and published a collection of his own poetry, including 1928's Burning Bush, and served as Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress from 1961 to 1963. Untermeyer reportedly held Marxist beliefs for part of his life and wrote for socialist magazines and was eventually blacklisted in the 1950s. Fold creases not near signature. Fine condition.
