LOUIS-VICTOR de BROGLIE
Louis-Victor de Broglie addresses an envelope to Monsieur Russell E. Silvius.
Autograph Envelope unsigned, 7¼x3¾. Addressed in his hand to: "Monsieur Russell E. Silvius/513 So. Beech Street/Bryan/Ohio, Etats Unis [United States]". Postmarked Neuilly sur Seine, France, June 11, 1949, 25-franc French stamp affixed. Envelope also bears stamped address and return address of Silvius and the stamped instruction: "Fragile - Please do not bend or crush." Born to a noble French family and inheriting the title of Duke after the death of his fellow scientist brother Maurice, Louis-Victor de Broglie (1892-1987) won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1929. He did pioneering work on the wave nature of the electron ("de Broglie waves") and was associated with the particle-wave duality theory: that matter has the properties of both particles and waves. A professor at the Institute Henri Poincare of the Sorbonne University in Paris, de Broglie also published popular works on the philosophical implications of modern physics, including The Revolution in Physics (1953). Ink note on verso (no show through). Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
