LOUISA CRANSTOUN NISBETT ("MISS MOURDANT")
The English actress regrets that her sore throat precludes a social visit.
Autograph Letter signed: "Louise C. Nisbett", 2 pages (front and verso with integral address leaf), 3½x5½. No place, "Saturday 22nd", no date. In full: "I have today a sore throat that will prevent my having the pleasure of seeing you as I had intended. My compliments to Mrs. [?] whom I will meet on another occasion. Any arrangements you make relating your benefit will of course suit me. [?] should there be any inconvenience. I remain dear Sir yours very faithfully". Louisa Cranstoun (Nisbett), 1812-1858, used the stage name of Miss Mourdant. She was already a Shakespeare veteran when she made her London debut at Drury Lane in The Soldier's Daughter (1829). Known for her beauty and high spirits, she was well suited to comedy roles. She twice retired from the stage after marriage, but returned after the early death of each husband: Captain John Nesbitt (her spouse 1831-1832) and Sir William Boothby (1844-1846). She starred as Lady Gay Spanker in London Assurance (1841), and made her final appearance as Lady Teazle in School for Scandal (1851). Two vertical and one horizontal fold. Pinhead-size hole at center of document. Slightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
