Autograph Letter signed: "Louise Bogan", 1 page, 5½x3¼. New
York, N. Y., 1955 February 9. On personal letterhead to "Dear Mr.
Biddle", in full: "Thank you very much indeed for your kind
remarks concerning the WNYC broadcast, and my work in general. It is heartening
to feel that one has an audience! And I shall keep your suggestion about
paperback anthologies in mind. Sincerely yours". Accompanied by
original mailing envelope addressed in her hand, and by a New York Times
Book Review article by Nancy Milford, published in 1973.American
poetLouise Bogan (1897-1970) was poetry editor of The New
Yorker for nearly 40 years (1931-1969), and her verses were published in
the most prominent American literary magazines. Her first poetry collection,
Body of this Death, appeared in 1923. A collection of her favorite
pieces, The Blue Estuaries, was published in 1968. Bogan was a
champion of traditional poetic forms, in contrast to the prevailing
modernism. Named the fourth Poet Laureate of the Library of Congress
(1945), she won the prestigious Bollingen Prize a decade later.
