Handwritten, signed letter from the actress, thanking a friend for
remembering that she was a "part of the industry", and saying that due to a loss
last March, that she has no upcoming plans for any projects. Extremely
rare!
Autograph letter signed: "Louise Dresser Gardner", in purple
ink, 2 pages, 7¼x10½. October 24, 1938. Glendale, California. In part:
"My Dear Charles Wack Jr., You are kind to remember, you and the rest who
know me when I was a part of the industry. I thank all of you - sincerely. Last
March my [illegible] was taken from me - my whole life was completely
changed. I know you will understand that for some time to come I would not be
interested in any plan for anything". Louise Dresser (1878-1965)
played strong character leads and supporting parts in silents and early
talkies. Her memorable roles include the title character in The Goose
Woman (1925), Catherine the Great (opposite Valentino) in The Eagle
(1925) and Al Jolson's loving mother in Mammy (1930). She also costarred
with Will Rogers in four films. Dresser, nominated for the first Academy
Award for Best Actress in 1927-1928 (A Ship Comes In), was presented
with a citation of merit at the first ceremonies. Normal mailing folds. Light
surface creases. Corners slightly worn and creased. Lightly toned. Otherwise,
fine condition.
