Autograph sentiment signed: "Believe me my dear Miss Bates/ Very truly yours/ Louise M. Rothschild" in faded black ink. 1 page, 5x2. Louise M. Rothschild (1821-1910) was born Louise Montefiore, and already a member of the Rothschild family on her mother's side when she married Anthony Nathan de Rothschild in 1840. Already an important member of the Anglo-Jewish community, Louise Rothschild would do much in her life time to become an outstanding figure in Anglo-Jewish history. With a talent for several languages, drawing, painting and reading, Rothschild used her skills to develop projects similar to a Christian women's philanthropic model, but within a Jewish framework. She became president of the Jewish Ladies' Benevolent Loan and Visiting Society, during which she established and funded a convalescent home; furthermore she founded the London Jews' Free School of which she oversaw the direction of the education of the girls. Rothschild also initiated and finance programs for immigrant girls after thousands of East European immigrant Jews flooded England from 1881, when in 1885 she established the West Central Friday Night Club which developed a variety of social, educational and recreational programs for Jewish working girls.
