Brigham City, Utah, 1990 June 29. To William Stanhope, Albuquerque, New
Mexico. Written at bottom of typed note requesting his autograph on photos (not
included). In full: "It was a pleasure to autograph your three photos.
It brought back some old memories. Sincerely." Chase J. Nielsen (born in
1917) was one of 80 flyers who volunteered for the famous Doolittle raid on
Tokyo (April 2, 1942), serving as the navigator on plane #6. Captured by the
Japanese after his bomber ditched at sea, Nielsen spent 40 months as a P.O.W.
under inhumane conditions. Nielsen, who testified at the war crimes trials of
1946, retired from the Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1961, continuing to
work with the service as an industrial engineer until 1981. Lightly creased.
