CHASE J. NIELSEN. ALS: "Chase J Nielsen", 1p, 8½x11. Brigham City, Utah, 1990 June 29. To William Stanhope, Albuquerque, New Mexico. Written at bottom of typed note requesting his autograph on photos (not included). In full: "It was a pleasure to autograph your three photos. It brought back some old memories. Sincerely." Chase J. Nielsen (born in 1917) was one of 80 flyers who volunteered for the famous Doolittle raid on Tokyo (April 2, 1942), serving as the navigator on plane #6. Captured by the Japanese after his bomber ditched at sea, Nielsen spent 40 months as a P.O.W. under inhumane conditions. Nielsen, who testified at the war crimes trials of 1946, retired from the Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1961, continuing to work with the service as an industrial engineer until 1981. Lightly creased. Fine condition.
