Autograph Envelope Signed: "AFFTC-DOY/MAJ SCOBEE/Edwards AFB, CA 93523" in return address portion, 12x9½. Addressed by Scobee to: "Bob Polk/4728 N. LAVERGNE AVE/CHICAGO, ILL (60630)" Francis Richard Scobee (1939-1986) was pilot of Space Shuttle 41-C mission (1984) that successfully deployed the Long Duration Exposure Facility, retrieved the ailing Solar Maximum Satellite and repaired it on-board the orbiting Challenger before replacing it in orbit using the robot arm called the Remote Manipulator System. His next flight was aboard the Space Shuttle 51-L mission, the ill-fated flight of the Challenger, which exploded 73 seconds after launch on January 28, 1986, killing Scobee and his six colleagues.
