Dick Scobee signs a philatelic envelope depicting the X-24B at the
NASA Flight Research Center.
Philatelic Envelope signed: "Dick Scobee/X-24B Pilot", 6½x3½.
Cachet depicts the X-24B at the NASA Flight Research Center, Edwards Air Force
Base, California, 10-cent U.S. Flags stamp affixed, postmarked Edwards, CA,
November 19, 1975. Example of Scobee's early signature which he changed to a
print-like signature after he became an astronaut. Scobee had graduated from
the USAF Aerospace Research Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base in 1972 and
participated in test programs flying such varied aircraft as the X-24B
(pictured), the Boeing 747, the transonic aircraft technology (TACT) F-111 and
the C-5. Scobee was the commander of the Challenger 51-L when it
exploded 73 seconds after lift-off on January 28, 1986. Vertical ink stain
to right of signature, stain from address label at lower right blank corner.
