An impressive piece, this 16x20 mounted image contains signatures from Dick Scobee and Ellison Onizuka, who perished in the tragic Space Shuttle Challenger STS-51-L mission, and also includes signatures from many other important NASA astronauts.

ELLISON ONIZUKA (1946-1986), an Air Force test pilot before becoming a NASA astronaut, flew aboard Discovery 51-C, January 24-27, 1985, the first shuttle mission with military objectives. Ironically, Challenger was scheduled for Mission 51-C, but thermal tile problems forced substitution of Discovery. Onizuka's next assignment was aboard Challenger 51-L, January 28, 1986, which exploded 73 seconds after liftoff, killing him and his six colleagues. DICK SCOBEE (1939-1986), who joined the Astronaut Corps in January 1978, first went into space on the April 6-13, 1984 flight of the space shuttle Challenger 41-C, the first mission to repair a satellite in orbit. Commander of space shuttle Challenger 51-L, he perished with his six colleagues when the shuttle exploded 73 seconds after launch on January 28, 1986. KAROL J. BOBKO (b. 1937) was the pilot on Challenger STS-6 (1983) and the mission Commander on Discovery STS-51D (1985) and Atlantis STS-51J (1985). He was one of NASA's lead investigators into the Challenger disaster. FREDERICK D. GREGORY (b. 1941), a US Air Force helicopter rescue pilot during the Vietnam War, became an astronaut in 1978. He was the pilot of Challenger 51-B (1985) and the commander of Discovery STS-33 (1989) and Atlantis STS-44 (1991). STEVEN A. HAWLEY (b. 1951) served as a mission specialist on STS-41D Discovery (1984), STS-61C Columbia (1986), STS-31 Discovery (1990), STS-82 Discovery (1997) and STS-93 Columbia (1999). Since 2010 he has served as the Director of Engineering and Physics at the University of Kansas. Hawley was awarded five NASA Space Flight Medals, two NASA Exceptional Service Medals, two NASA Distinguished Service Medals and two Presidential Rank Awards. LOREN J. SHRIVER (b. 1944), a US Air Force colonel and former test pilot, made three flights on the space shuttle, logging 386 hours in space. He was Pilot of Discovery on STS-51C (1985), a classified Department of Defense mission. He was Commander of Discovery on STS-31 (1990), which deployed the Hubble Space Telescope; and of Atlantis on STS-46 (1992), which placed in orbit two scientific satellites of the European Space Agency. US Navy pilot DONALD E. WILLIAMS (1942-2016) made two Vietnam deployments (330 combat missions) aboard the carrier Enterprise. Williams flew in space twice: as pilot of Discovery on mission STS-51D (1985) and as spacecraft commander of Atlantis on STS-34 (1989), logging over 287 hours in space. After retiring from NASA and the Navy in 1990, Williams became a Division Manager with Science Applications International. Mount curved along right margin. Tear on top margin.
