DICK SCOBEE and EINAR ENEVOLDSON
Dick Scobee and Einar Enevoldson signs a flight cover envelope.
Flight Cover signed: "Dick Scobee" and "Einar Enevoldson, NASA", 6½x3½. Airmail envelope bearing 13-cent Independence Hall/U.S. flag stamp, postmarked Edwards, California, August 18, 1977. Rubber stamped cachet: "F-111/Super Critical Wing/NASA Flight Research Center/Edwards A.F.B., California", also noted: "Flight- 111/Crew-Einar Enevoldson/Maj. Dick Scobee". This was a test flight for the F-111 which is pictured on the cachet. DICK SCOBEE (1939-1986) was the pilot of Challenger STS-41C (1984) and commander of Challenger STS-51L (1986). Scobee perished with his six colleagues on the ill-fated Challenger space shuttle that exploded 73 seconds after launch on January 28, 1986. EINAR ENEVOLDSON, a former NASA test pilot, is now part of the Perlan Team, working to break the altitude record for glider flight. The ultimate goal of this project is to pilot (with Steve Fossett) a sailplane to an altitude of 100,000, double the current record, riding the Polar Vortex. Typed collectors address at lower right. Fine condition.
