Dick Scobee and Don Mallick sign a special cover for the NASA jet star shuttle test aircraft.
Special Cover signed: "Don Mallick" and "Dick Scobee", 6½x3¾. Special Cover for the "NASA Jet Star Shuttle Test Aircraft Space Shuttle Landing Tests.", 13-cent 13-star flag/Independence Hall stamp affixed, postmarked Edwards, California, May 4, 1977. DON MALLICK (born in 1930) was a NASA research pilot at the Dryden Flight Research Center from 1963-1981, later becoming Deputy Chief of the Dryden Aircraft Operations Division. Chief Pilot from 1967, he was involved in the YF-12 and XB-70 research programs, and in the mid-1960s, he was chief project pilot for NASA's Lunar Landing Research Vehicle (LLRV). FRANCIS RICHARD SCOBEE (1939-1986) was pilot of Space Shuttle 41-C mission (1984) that successfully deployed the Long Duration Exposure Facility, retrieved the ailing Solar Maximum Satellite and repaired it on-board the orbiting Challenger before replacing it in orbit using the robot arm called the Remote Manipulator System. His next flight was aboard the Space Shuttle 51-L mission, the ill-fated flight of the Challenger, which exploded 73 seconds after launch on January 28, 1986, killing Scobee and his six colleagues.
