DON "RODIE" RODEWALD
The crew chief for the Flying Tigers and Air Force pilot signs this photograph of himself in a cockpit
Photograph signed: "Rodie Rodewald" in black ink. 10x8. Donald "Rodie" Rodewald (1918-2002) was a crew chief who helped maintain the P-40s flown by the celebrated "Flying Tigers" before U.S. entry into World War II. He joined the U.S. Army Air Corps and graduated from their Aircraft Armament School in 1939. Rode worked to armor the Flying Tigers until they were officially disbanded in July, 1942. He later became a pilot, flying a U.S. P-51 against Japan in the CBI (China - Burma - India) Theatre. In the Korean War, he downed an enemy MIG-15 while out "testing" a new gunsight. Lightly creased. Ink note (unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
