ELLISON S. ONIZUKA
Ellison Onizuka signs a commemorative envelope honoring Shuttle Full
Duration Firing.
Commemorative Envelope signed: "Ellison S. Onizuka/Space Shuttle
Astronaut", 6½x3½. Envelope honoring the complete static firing of the
shuttle. 15 cent flag stamp attached postmarked Saint Louis, Mississippi,
December 17, 1979. Rubber-stamped "Shuttle/Full Duration Firing" cachet at
left. On December 17, 1979, for the first time, a complete static firing of the
shuttle was accomplished. It included three main engines running up to 100
percent of rated thrust for 554 seconds. Onizuka (1946-1986) flew aboard
Discovery 51-C, January 24-27, 1985, the first shuttle mission with
military objectives. Ironically, Challenger was scheduled for Mission
51-C, but thermal tile problems forced substitution of Discovery.
Onizuka's next assignment was aboard Challenger 51-L, January 28,
1986, which exploded 73 seconds after liftoff, killing him and his six
colleagues. Slightly soiled at lower right blank corner. Fine
condition.
