DISCOVERY: SPACE SHUTTLE MISSION 51-C
The astronauts from Discovery sign a philatelic envelope honoring Conquest of Space.
Philatelic Envelope signed: "Ken Mattingly", "Loren Shriver", "Ellison Onizuka", "James F. Buchli" and "Gary Payton", 6½x3½. Printed cachet honors "Conquest of Space"; "Space Shuttle Launch. Mission 15 (51/C)" typed inside border, 13-cent Robert Goddard stamp and 8-cent John F. Kennedy stamps affixed, postmarked Kennedy Space Center, Fl, Jan. 24, 1985. This was the 15th space shuttle mission, and the first dedicated to the Department of Defense. It was the third shuttle mission for Commander MATTINGLY, who had orbited the Moon on Apollo 16, and the first for SHRIVER (Pilot), PAYTON (Payload Specialist), BUCHLI (Mission Specialist) and ONIZUKA (Mission Specialist). Ironically, the mission was conducted on the shuttle Discovery after an intended January 23 launch aboard the shuttle Challenger had to be scrubbed due to problems resulting from freezing weather. One year later, almost to the day, Onizuka and six other crew members died in the launch of Challenger, with freezing weather this time contributing to a catastrophic malfunction. Fine condition.
