Both Shuttle astronauts sign a First Day Cover honoring Skylab.
First Day Cover signed: "Ellison S. Onizuka", "Dave Walker", 6½x3½. FDC celebrating the Conquest of Space, 10-cent Skylab stamp affixed, postmarked May 14, 1974, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. ELLISON ONIZUKA (1946-1986), an Air Force test pilot before becoming a NASA astronaut, flew aboard Discovery 51-C, January 24-27, 1985, the first shuttle mission with military objectives. Ironically, Challenger was scheduled for Mission 51-C, but thermal tile problems forced substitution of Discovery. Onizuka's next assignment was aboard Challenger 51-L, January 28, 1986, which exploded 73 seconds after liftoff, killing him and his six colleagues. DAVID WALKER (1944-2001) logged 724 hours in space between 1984 and 1995, piloting one space shuttle mission and serving as mission commander on three others. Fine condition.
