DOOLITTLE RAIDERS: FRANK KAPPELER
Signed Autograph Note on a lined sheet of paper
Autograph Note signed: "Hope that this is ok/Sincerely,/Frank
Kappeler", 5x1½ lined sheet of paper. Led by James "Jimmy" Doolittle, 80
men on 16 B-25 bombers took off from the carrier USS Hornet on April 18,
1942. The raid, which marked the first time fully loaded bombers took off from
an aircraft carrier, was in retaliation for Japan's surprise attack on Pearl
Harbor. "Doolittle's Raiders" hit targets in Tokyo, Yokohama and other
cities and scored a huge victory for U.S. morale at a time when Japan's position
in the Pacific seemed impregnable. Upon reaching Japan, Kappeler's bomber, Plane
#11, fought off enemy fighters and probably shot one down before bombing a large
oil refinery and storage area. The entire crew reached safety in China, although
two crew members suffered injuries while bailing out. Later trained as a
bombardier, Lt. Kappeler (b. 1914) served throughout the war in the
China-Burma-India and European Theaters. Irregular top edge. Fine
condition.
