royal family of the United Kingdom for many years, working as Private Secretary for
King George V. After serving as an assistant to other government figures in Canada and being
placed on active military duty, he became George VI's Assistant Private Secretary until
George's death. In gratitude for his years of service, he was awarded a life peerage as
